Katherine Gorge is a network of 13 sandstone gorges carved away over time by the Katherine River. Cruising through the gorge, surrounded by sandstone and tropical bushland, the sheer size and beauty will take your breath away.
Katherine Gorge is the central attraction of the Nitmiluk National Park. This ancient sandstone network of gorges has been carved away over millions of years by the Katherine River, creating pools, rapids and falls to be enjoyed by the many visitors that come to explore the mystery and beauty of Katherine Gorge.
Katherine Gorge is also known as Nitmiluk Gorge to the traditional landowners, the Jawoyn and Dagomen people. The literal translation is Cicada Place. This area has significant cultural importance as evidenced by the various rock paintings dotted throughout the area.
The tropical landscape is also home to an abundance unique species of wildlife. Be sure to keep a look out for Red Goshawks or Black Kites circling above, lizards and dragons scuttling in the undergrowth, or you may spot a northern quoll or sugar glider on your adventures. Of course, there are also the saltwater crocodiles that lurk near the shore.
