Salvador was the first capital of Portuguese Brazil, making it one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas. Located on a gorgeous stretch of coastline, Salvador is a cultural centre with a vibrant arts movement. It’s also the city where Brazilian’s come here to party, its carnival is particularly renowned!
As a former slave port, there is a lot of African influence here and that heritage remains strong today – you’ll see it in the dance, hear it in the music and taste it in the food. The city is split into an upper and lower town, the two are connected by the ‘Elevador Lacerda’ and have been since 1873. The upper town is where you’ll find the Pelourinho area, the UNESCO-listed old town, full of colourful buildings and fanciful 17th and 18th century colonial architecture.
