Our Tour: Good

Service rating :

Jason Gao (National guide) was amazing and local Guide Susan in Chengdu and Andy in Beijing were good/

Product :

Hotels at Beijing and Xi'an were good, especially the Boffo L in Xi'an (which we believe was brand new to Wend Wu Tours). Hotel in Chengdu was disappointing - staff did not speak much English, not very helpful, room was disappointing.

Their main guide was very good, however the local guides were not upto scratch. It is a shame that the local guide in Beijing was the worst because he hardly told us anything about the places we visited. Especially considering that Beijing has more historical monuments to see than Shanghai, Chengdu or even Xian.

Product :

The cruise was good and the places we visited were very interesting. The local guides were good.

Service rating :

The tour was well planned and organised. Booking was easy and all the documents arrived early, There was a lot of useful tips and information for the trip. The Chinese phases were helpful. The local tour guides were excellent especially Effie in Guilin, Lee in Beijing and Alex in Shanghai. They were all friendly and informative. Our tour guide Micheal was good espy ferromagnetic place to place without loosing anyone

Product :

This is a fabulous tour giving you good taste of China and seeing the major sites. It is very full on with early starts and some late finishes. The food is generally good but in some places we tended to get the same things for every meal. I think the Yangtze cruise could be a day shorter and it would have been useful to be offered the up grades when booking. I would have liked to experience the bullet train and had one less flight. All the in flight meals were terrible. The adds were good and could have been included in the price of the tour. China is truely amazing and came up to all my expectations. I feel we could have seen more in Chengdu as we had a day free before an evening flight. I will definitely be booking again with Wendy Wu and returning to China.

Our Response

Thank you for your 5* review,
We are delighted that you thought the tour was well planned and organised, and that your booking process was easy and informative. We are also thrilled that you found the local guides excellent, friendly and informative.
We hope you made some wonderful memories and that you will book with us again soon.

TIMES ULTIMATE TOUR OF CHINA

We went on The Times Ultimate Tour of China in conjunction with Wendy Woo.
We visited Tianamman Square and the Forbidden City. We had a rickshaw ride through the hutongs, a tai chi lesson in the park, attended an acrobatic show at the theatre. We took the cable car up the Great Wall and came down on a toboggan run which was great fun. We later went to the Llama Temple.
We flew from Beijing to Xian and went to see the Terracotta Warriors and later did a bike ride along the city walls of Xian and also had a calligraphy lesson.
We travelled to see the pandas in Chengdu and also the Taoist temple at Mt Quingcheng and then on to Chongquing to go on a three night Yangtze River cruise and then on to Shanghai by bus, bullet train and flight.
Our food was fantastic and inexpensive particularly in the small local restaurants.
This was definitely not a restful holiday but a fantastic experience. We had an amazing national ******, Link Lee, who made the trip really special for us and suceeded in creating a cohesive (family) group with our fellow passengers, Link Lee being the undoubted leader. This experience has given us a thirst to discover more about China and continue our travels there. We would go with Wendy Woo again and definitely Link Lee. He is a really outstanding guide who gave tirelessly of his time and energy.

CHINA DELIGHTS

Tuesday 28 Nov 2017
Overview Rating:
Our Service: Excellent
This fully-escorted tour unquestionably lived up to its name by being truly delightful from start to finish. Over its 18-day duration we enjoyed uninterrupted sunshine and covered a lot of ground, not just literally (i.e. approximately 3000 miles of internal travel by air, coach, boat and train), but also historically and culturally. As a consequence, the pace was at times quite challenging, prompting occasional wistfulness on our part for a little more opportunity to enjoy the comforts and facilities of the consistently good, and sometimes very swish, hotels in which we stayed. Ultimately, however, a bit more downtime would have been a poor exchange for any of the many gems which Wendy Wu managed to pack into an itinerary which was always busy without ever feeling rushed. Highlights for us included, inevitably, the Great Wall, the Terracotta Warriors, and the Panda Conservation Centre, all of which surpassed our already high expectations. There were, however, many other less iconic but equally memorable experiences: e.g. a leisurely, spectacular cruise on the River Li, and our visits to a tea plantation at Meijiawu Village, the Reed Flute Caves near Guilin, and the Grand Buddha at Leshan. We also thoroughly enjoyed the 6 shows which were either included in the tour package itself or available as optional extras, most notably the Impression Liu Sanjie Show in the bay at Yangshuo, the Face-Changing Show in Chengdu and the Shaolin Monks' Kung Fu Show in Beijing. If, like us, you were to take up all of the optional extras, which number about 8 in all and include a ride on the high-speed Maglev train in Shanghai, you would need to budget for a locally-payable total of about £250 per person, but in our view this is very good value for money.
Our many adventures were expertly choreographed by our good-humoured national tour guide, David, who seamlessly organised the tour group's numerous excursions and micro-managed the complicated logistics of our travel, sleeping and eating arrangements. A mine of information about China in general and about his home city, Xi-an, in particular, he provided us and our fellow-travellers with invaluable help and support with routine issues (e.g. shopping advice, translation, locating banks, ATMs, pharmacies, etc.) as well as responding sensitively and efficiently to a range of minor ailments, an accidental injury and a -serious, but thankfully resolved, medical emergency. David regularly entertained us with amusing anecdotes and jokes, but we felt honoured that he was also willing to share so much about himself, his family and his hopes. He was ably assisted by a succession of local guides, all of them very personable and knowledgeable and one, in particular, deserving of special mention. Alice, our elfin but feisty guide in Shanghai and Suzhou, took very seriously her responsibilities for our well-being and for our better enjoyment and understanding of her region. A very warm, endearing character, she went way beyond the call of duty in giving us glimpses of her personal life, taking and circulating group photos and even, on a couple of occasions, singing to us all on the coach.
Alice it was who unwittingly labelled us as "The Vegetables", along with the only other non-meat-eater in our group, Nicola. Her innocent mistake was echoed by a seemingly limited understanding of vegetarianism in some of the restaurants in which we ate, where succulent, predominantly vegetable dishes were sometimes rendered inaccessible to us by small amounts of meat and where plain boiled vegetables were occasionally our only option. Indeed, at one stage it felt as though we were being stalked from one restaurant to the next by the same plate of boiled cauliflower!! Generally, however, we ate very well. This was partly as a result of the interventions of David, Alice and our other guides, but partly too because of the thoughtfulness and generosity of other members of our tour group, All of them at various times acted as unofficial tasters where the meat content of a dish was uncertain, and they regularly ensured that we and Nicola had first dibs and second helpings whenever tofu, aubergines or other vegetarian dishes appeared. In many respects these mealtime collaborations typified our 15-strong tour group which, contrary to our pre-tour reservations about spending almost 3 weeks in the close company of strangers, proved to be as kind, as companionable and as cohesive an assortment of people as you could ever hope to meet.
In conclusion, we would heartily recommend this tour, which even included a promotional 2-night stop-over in Hong Kong. To all at Wendy Wu, especially our guides and, in particular, David and Alice, and to each and every one of our travelling companions, thank you very much for making this trip so utterly exhilarating and memorable.

Our National Guide, Addison looked after us extremely well. Nothing was too much trouble, he organised each section of the holiday without any hitch, and did so with great humour and great efficiency. Local guides were generally good, especially Lewis in Beijing and the Great Wall who showed good knowledge of history and provided us with useful and interesting information. The hotels were generally good, although one or two did fall slightly below expectations, and the hotel in Chengdu is in an area which seemed poor and run down. The Gubei Water Town Hotel was exceptional, unfortunately we had only a short time there

Product :

We thoroughly enjoyed the tour, the highlight being the hike along the Jinshanling section of the Great Wall and the Longji Rice Terrace. The Terracotta warrior visit also rated highly. A lot was packed into this holiday and it was energetic and fast moving, but very rewarding overall. The group size of 11 was just right, and we all got on very well.

Our Response

Welcome home! Glad to have you back after from your 'China Trailblazer' tour and thank you for taking the time to post your fantastic review of your experiences while on tour with us.

Its great to hear your great comments about your guide Adison who has obviously improved your experiences while on tour and ensured you have had an amazing time. It will be great to let him know you are pleased with the attention to detail he has shown and we are sure he will be delighted with your comments.

Thank you for your comments regarding your hotels and note that Chengdu is quite remote in comparison to some other major cities on this tour.

Thank you for your comments about your itinerary also and we are absolutely delighted you have enjoyed your touring and hope you will travel with us again at some point in the not too distant future.

Kind regards,

An excellent well organised tour. Hotels a good standard. The scenery was magnificent, particularly in the Nine village Valley and the Himalayas. The Tibetan villages provided an insight into the local customs, and the changing face show in Chengdu was amazing. The pandas were cute!!!

This was the second time I have travelled with Wendy Wu. Everything pre trip ran smoothly, including receiving appropriate information prior to travel and the ease of obtaining a Chinese visa. As a solo traveller I apprdciate the fact that you can save paying the single supplement as Wendy Wu will try and find a room sharer.

Our tour ******, Celine, could not have been more helpful and always willing to sort out any problems promptly and as best she could. The itinerary was very good, giving a mix of towns and rural areas with interesting visits to Mt Emei, the Nine Villages Valley and the Chengdu Panda Conservation Centre.
We covered great distances which unfortunately sometimes resulted in a few lengthy journeys on the coach, but the changing scenery of mountains, countryside and different towns made up for that, and many photo opportunities.

Our Response

Welcome home and thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback following your Sichuan Explorer tour.

By your review it really sounds like you have been able to appreciate the wonders of this part of China and all it has on offer. Your Guide Celine will be delighted to hear your kind words and will be proud she was able to enhance your experience.

We hope you had enough camera space for all of those pictures of great scenery.

Service rating :

The service was very good and the accommodation were excellent. The first 2 tour guides Lotus and Helen in Beijing and Xi'an respectively, were excellent very patient with us and listened to what we wanted to do. The third tour guide Rita was a bit frosty at the start and didn't seem to want to be there when we got to Chengdu. For the evening meal we were told we had a budget of 120RM and she selected the food for us. Was not pleasant meal. However as the tour progress Rita started to warm to us and become more approachable and friendly (I can only assume she was having a bad day on the first day we met her). The last day she took us to see the pandas then to Chengdu Jinli Ancient street. She also suggested we try the hotpot and see the opera, which nicely wrapped up our tour.

Product :

Overall it was an awesome holiday! The only thing I was upset about was not being able to hold a panda. But this was out of your control and another reason for us to comeback.

Our Response

We are pleased to hear that you had an awesome holiday and thank you for choosing Wendy Wu Tours. We are happy that your overall impression of the Discover China tour was great.

Our guide George was just wonderful. The best.
He was a very personable young man
Considerate, thoughtful, caring, patient, hardworking and extremely efficient. He was with us ever step of the way.
He was constantly doing his very best to ensure we had a smooth, stress free, memorable trip experiencing the best China had to offer, the culture, the food, stunning scenery as well as the plants

Product :

Special thanks to Jim Gardiner and Chris Bailes, our UK experts for generously sharing their knowledge, also for their good humour and companionship. It was a delightful group of like minded people.
We had a really amazing trip.
Apart from one, our 5* hotels were excellent.
Sadly we felt October was maybe not the best month for finding plants in flower...but then again the autumn colours/snow added to beauty of the stunning scenery.
There was a lot of traveling and days sometimes long and tiring...inevitable to cover the areas on the itinerary.
Bit miffed that we had to fly via Hong Kong, when others in the group were booked on a direct flight to Chengdu and had an extra 14 hours to get over the jet lag on arrival...this holiday was after all booked 18months in advance!

Our Response

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your tour. We are very pleased to hear you had a wonderful trip and the service provided by the National Escort, George, has exceeded your expectations. It is this very feedback that helps us to maintain and improve our high standards and we are grateful for all your comments. Service rating :

The national guide was excellent. She ensured the tour was a success by her attention to detail and the effort she put into tackling the inevitable problems that occurred. The local guides were more mixed. The best were also excellent but some were quite poor.

Product :

It was a once in a lifetime trip to China and in that respect it fulfilled our wishes. We expected it to be quite strenuous but some days were extremely long and very tiring. Much of this could not be avoided in order to visit all of the places but on one or two days it did not seem worthwhile to have had such a long day. In particular I would single out the day trip to Leshuan from Chengdu - the coach driver got lost and we spent many hours travelling for basically a 30 minute cruise to the Grand Budda.
